Ask any refinery owner what number matters most and the answer is instant: recovery. Ask when they last checked it and the answer is usually vaguer — at month-end, when the accountant totals input against output. By then a bad batch is three weeks old, the metal is gone, and nobody can say which run went wrong.
The Only Equation That Matters
Input fine equals output fine plus loss. Every batch must close on that equation, and a refining system that lets a batch stay open without closing it is not a system, it is a filing cabinet. When reconciliation happens per batch, a breach is visible the same day and can still be investigated while the operator remembers the run.
Two Assays, Not One
Declared purity is a claim. Assayed purity is a fact. A refinery ERP should record an assay on the way in and an assay on the way out, with method, technician and sample reference attached to both. The purity upgrade then becomes a measured result rather than an assumption, and a customer dispute is settled by the record instead of by whoever argues longer.
Output Must Trace Back to Input
Refineries batch multiple customers' lots into one melt because it is efficient. The accounting consequence is that output bars must split back to contributing lots by fine-weight share. Without that lineage, you cannot tell a customer which bar came from their metal, and you cannot defend the split when they ask.
Tolerance Is a Business Rule, Not a Feeling
Every refinery has an allowed loss percentage, usually different by metal and process. Encode it. When a batch closes outside tolerance, the system should flag it immediately and hold the certificate until someone signs off. A tolerance that lives only in the manager's head gets quietly stretched, one batch at a time, until it is no longer a tolerance at all.
Sweeps Are Inventory, Not Rubbish
Dust, sweeps and polish waste accumulate in a drum in the corner and, in most refineries, appear nowhere in the books until someone finally sends them for recovery. That is real fine metal sitting at zero book value. Tracked properly, sweeps have their own collection, accumulation and recovery cycle, and the returned metal posts back against the batches it came from.
What Changes When You Measure Per Batch
Refineries that move from monthly to per-batch reconciliation usually find the same thing: their average recovery was fine, and it was hiding a handful of genuinely bad runs. Averages are comfortable and useless. The point of per-batch measurement is not to produce a prettier report — it is to catch the specific run, on the specific day, while doing something about it is still possible.
